Dr. Kathrine Frey – Chief Medical Officer/Founder
Dr. Frey is a patient safety and blood management pioneer. Board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and also in Transfusion Medicine, Dr. Frey is a practicing pathologist and has been Director of Transfusion Medicine at Fairview Southdale, a 350-bed community hospital since 1996. Beginning in 2009, she and her blood management team have reduced hospital blood use by 33% concurrent with increased surgical volumes for a composite savings of $35 MM. A peri-operative anemia clinic was added to hospital blood management services in 2011 with greater than 80% decrease in blood usage by evaluated patients. As a nationally recognized expert on patient blood management, Dr. Frey is a frequent speaker on this emerging medical discipline and how it relates to improving patient outcomes and reducing healthcare costs. Dr. Frey is a member of Society for the Advancement of Blood Management (SABM), Standards Committee of the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) and a Member of the Women Business Leaders of the US Healthcare Industry Foundation (WBL).
Dr. Deborah Tolich, DNP, MSN, RN – Director, Care Navigation, Quality & Safety
Dr. Tolich is a highly skilled healthcare professional with more than 25 years practice experience in acute care hospital environments. Dr. Tolich is skilled in leading the integration and coordination of service elements into streamlined customer-focused organizational infrastructures. She is also skilled at formulating short and long-term business and care strategies to ensure an organization’s mission is achieved through the delivery of high quality, cost effective patient care including establishing evidence-based clinical practice protocols, guidelines, process improvement and change management initiatives. Dr. Tolich has worked in the field of patient blood management for the past 15 years and is considered a subject matter expert in the field, is currently in the position of Director of Blood Management for the Cleveland Clinic health system, a national speaker and author on the subject with having published research on patient descriptions of receiving a blood transfusion as well as implementation of patient blood management programs.
Dr. Irwin Gross – Senior Medical Advisor
Irwin Gross, M.D. is Medical Director of Transfusion Services at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Maine. He is also Medical Director of Eastern Maine Medical Center’s Blood Management and Conservation Program. He is Board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, and serves on the Board of the SABM. From 1985 through 1998, Dr. Gross practiced general anatomic and clinical pathology at Eastern Maine Medical Center and served as medical director of several small rural hospital laboratories in the region. In 1999, Dr. Gross was appointed Medical Director of Affiliated Laboratories. While he was Medical Director, his particular areas of interest were hematopathology, coagulation, and transfusion medicine. In the fall of 2006, Dr. Gross began the Eastern Maine Medical Center Blood Management and Conservation Program. In addition to ongoing efforts to reduce allogeneic transfusions, Eastern Maine Medical Center is developing a program to help providers actively manage anemia before, during, and after hospitalization. Since the beginning of their patient blood management program, EMMC has reduced allogeneic red cell transfusions by over 50%
Andrea Pederson, JD – Regulatory, Legal & Contract Administration
Andrea has over 35 years experience as a corporate lawyer and business advisor to clients of various sizes across a number of industries but mainly healthcare and financial segments. Seven years in her career she was an accountant and internal auditor. In 2008, Andrea started her own practice, with a focus on the business and legal needs of small and emerging businesses and often serves as out-sourced in-house counsel for clients.
Jason Carney – COO
Jason has over 15 years experience as an executive in the blood banking industry. In 2011, Jason became Florida’s first blood center Transfusion Safety Officer working to innovate patient blood management initiatives between hospitals and blood centers. In 2015, Jason was awarded the Florida Association of Blood Banks (FABB) “Dorothy M Hansen Award” for Executive of the Year. A strong background in operations and software implementation and integration helps support PRI’s mission to provide virtual peri-operative anemia services to patients in need.
